OVERVIEW

Along is an iOS app for coordinating group walks on the UBC campus in Vancouver. Students sign in with Google, see upcoming walks on a live map, and ask to join one — or create their own with a start, an end and a walking route, leaving now or in a few minutes. Built as a two-person team.

WHAT I FOUND → WHAT I DECIDED

  • Walks only make sense on campus, and a tap can land anywhere on the mapPoints outside the UBC boundary are refused with a haptic, and the boundary is drawn on the map for five seconds
  • Routing and geocoding need API keys that shouldn't ship inside the appBoth run in Supabase Edge Functions; routing can switch between OpenRouteService and GraphHopper by configuration
  • On a campus, a building name says more than a street addressPlace names come from a campus building lookup in Postgres first, with Mapbox as the fallback
  • A walker can only be on one walk at a timeOne active and one upcoming walk per person, enforced by the database as well as the app

WHAT IT DOES

MAP
Upcoming walks appear on a Mapbox map and update in real time through Supabase.
ROUTE
Tap a destination and get a walking route with distance and estimated time, recalculated as you move.
CREATE
Leave now or in a few minutes, as a public or a private walk.
JOIN
Request to join a walk; the owner accepts or declines from the activity feed.
PROFILE
Profiles with walk count and rating, identity verification, privacy settings and walk history.
OFFLINE
Losing connection clears the map, and any action flags the offline banner instead of failing silently.

HOW IT WAS BUILT

Built in sprints on feature branches reviewed through pull requests. My co-creator built the map, routing and geocoding; I built the activity feed, walk requests, the walk detail screen and the profile screens. Supabase covers sign-in, the Postgres database, real-time updates and the Edge Functions.
